July 2011 Dear Parents,
As we finish our next to last week in school I felt it important to keep you up to date with what has happened this month so far.
End of Year Reports/Parent and Children Meeting with Teacher This was again extremely well attended so thank you for your great interest in what your child is doing in school. It is extremely important for them to know this. I was delighted with the vast majority of the reports I read, and made a comment on. Most of the children have made at least good, and in some cases, exceptional progress during the year which is fantastic. As already stated in two letters, if for any reason you were unable to attend then we do want to see you, so please phone to make a convenient arrangement to meet.
Giant Sleepover Seemed to be an extremely popular event, a first for St.Cuthbert's. The children really enjoyed themselves and actually were very good at settling down. Thanks to the staff who attended and STAYED and to some of our PFC Group who are Beaver Leaders and CRB checked.
Children's University Our first venture into this initiative which basically rewards a child's enthusiasm and participation in extra curricular activities, that means outside of class times. As you know all are invited to participate in the vast range of different clubs from Enterprise, Choir, Choral Speaking, High 5's Netball, Football, Cookery, Athletics- indoor and outdoor, ICT, Eco-Club, School Council etc. What we do is to encourage participation- not force it. The children enrol on an 8 to 10 week club and attendance and participation is necessary in order to gain credits. These then go towards gaining awards in the first stage Bronze, Silver and Gold. These credits are able to be transferred over to the next year if not gained enough for a particular award. As this was our first year we were allowed to do clubs, in hindsight and give credits and so most children were completely unaware of being put in for the Children's University. They were a credit to themselves and our school with 66% of KS2 gaining some sort of award. We were complimented on this for our first attempt. No primary junior school gain 100%, but this is a very high uptake.
For the 4th successive term the Local Authorities inspector has given us a 'Grade 1 Ofsted' rating which is OUTSTANDING. This is for Care, for Standards and Progress, for Creative Curriculum and Teaching, so well done to all involved from children, parents, governors and staff. I am privileged to work on two sites where we have not only talented but dedicated staff who give that something 'extra' that supports our children's learning and well being. I am indebted to them and want to thank them; I know that every child doesn't get the same as they do across the Federation. This was Mrs Maunders last report and she thanked me for letting her be part of a 'vibrant and exciting' learning journey who's focus is to create an environment that all have the opportunities to fulfil their full potential, nice of her to say this, she didn't have to.
School asked to Represent Liverpool in Merseyside Youth Games What a fantastic achievement and honour to be asked as a school to represent our city in this county competition held on Saturday at beginning of July at Wavertree. We were asked to send a High 5's Netball Team (boys and girls) that have been trained since October and played in competitions and were finalists in Liverpool Competition. They were great and the vast majority of the Squad (8 out of 10) were Year 5 or younger- looks great for the future.
Liverpool Schools Football Teams We submitted both boys and girls for these teams for next September, and are delighted that '3' are through for the final stages. Good luck to them all.
Athletics Minor Championships and City Championships Again we are building a great reputation in this sport. We had many children gaining medals and certificates in both competitions. We were the smallest school, but this didn't stop us from doing extremely well. In fact both Boys and Girls teams won the Merit trophy, a fantastic achievement. Again, we will look to build upon this with our younger children next year.
Not Size but 'Talent' and 'Opportunity to Shine' At St.Cuthbert's we try within our own limitations to give our talent a chance to shine. So from winning medals at the City of Liverpool Speaking Competition to Football or athletic medals as well as certificates for swimming and art, we give all the opportunity to shine BUT they must seize this chance.
